The guitar is a difficult instrument in free jazz. Compared to other instruments there are not many players whose sound matches with this music, although there were the late greats Derek Bailey and Sonny Sharrock and there are James Blood Ulmer, Christian Fennesz or Raoul Björkenheim ... 

Another interesting player I discovered recently is Vinz Vonlanthen. Silo is his first collaboration with Christophe Berthet (saxophones, clarinets) and Cyril Bondi (drums) and it converts a wide range of improvised music in which especially the quieter tracks are the more interesting ones. “Passage”, for example, is a highly contemplative track with Berthet stumbling in on bass clarinet while the guitar is picking dissonant chords. A spooky atmosphere is created here – like listening to the jungle at night. Towards the ending the sounds fray out even more before ! a long and lonely note on the bass clarinet ends the song. “Chimère” is another almost tender track, it is timid, the muffled sounds are very shy, as if they did not dare to come out of the instruments. Finally, the exception proves the rule.

“Cynagogene” uses looped wah-wah-guitar riffs as a foundation to build up several layers of guitar sounds so that a hectic and nervous saxophone and staccato drums can soar over the track. A very varied and interesting album.

Troisième album du guitariste Vinz Vonlanthen sur le label londonien, après "Œil" en solo (2004) et "Vll678" en trio (2010). Cette « nouveauté » a déjà trois ans d’âge – en bon caviste, Leo prend le temps de laisser vieillir les bandes, juste ce qu’il faut, avant de les mettre sur le marché. ... Les titres passent de l’immensité du cosmos (Astéroïde) à l’infiniment petit (Microcosme), de lieux donnés (Brest, Alcatraz, Berlin) à des notions plus abstraites (Passage, Présage, 7h13, Crépusculaire), participant à l’évocation d’ambiances entre chien et loup. La musique, aux dissonances feutrées, s’apparente à la visite périlleuse d’une centrale nucléaire livrée à la rouille purulente et aux vapeurs nocives de quelque turpitude atomique. Ce qui ne la rend pas moins captivante. Les trois sapeurs nous guident comme un seul homme à travers ces couloirs mal éclairés avec un sang-froid apte à contaminer ceux qui n’ont rien contre l’impro la plus radicale. Les autres feront grise mine et tomberont en syncope. En dépit de sa haute teneur radioactive, un disque à ne pas fuir comme l’alpestre. David Cristol

Der Schweizer Gitarrist Vinz Vonlanthen spielt auch auf seiner dritten CD für Leo Records wieder eine Musik zwischen improvisiertem Jazz, zeitgenössischer Musik und experimenteller Rockmusik, sie sich durch ungewöhnliche Klangkombinationen und atmosphärisch dicht gewebte Soundflächen auszeichnet.
Christophe Berthet am Saxophon und Klarinette bestimmt über weite Strecken die Musik des Trios, Cyril Bondi am Schlagzeug akzentuiert in der Konversation mit seinen Partnern einen Rhythmus, der mal straight, mal smooth daherkommt. Neben sorgfältig arrangierten programmatischen Passagen stehen ausgedehnte Improvisationen, die Musik lebt vom Moment und ist nur im Kontext der Stücke zu verstehen. Herausragend: der "Animal Song", der Assoziationen zu einer Vielzahl von Tieren provoziert und den aufmerksamen Hörer durch den Zoo nachtaktiver Tiere mit teilweise beängstigenden Lauten führt. Auch in andern Songs öffnen sich geheimnisvolle Welten jenseits gängiger Soundklischees. Alles ist möglich, fast aller wird ausprobiert, angedeutet, wieder verworfen, in das Gesamtbild integriert. Vinz Vonlanthen erweist in "Cyanogène" mit äusserst expressiven Gitarrenläufen selbst Jimi Hendrix eine Reverenz. Der Song "Durch Berlin" schliesslich wird zum sehr persönlichen musikalischen Stadtführer, indem er die Widersprüche der Metropole mit zahllosen Klangimpressionen mosaikartig zu einem Gesamtbild führt, um es gleich darauf wieder zu zerreissen und erneut zusammenzusetzen.
